Welcome to all incoming Medical And Physician Assistant Students!

We are very proud to welcome you all to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine.  This site details the computer requirements for incoming students and provides a link to the Dell Preferred Account TM page, where we have arranged for you to purchase new laptops directly from Dell at a significantly reduced price.  This summer, we will be re-launching the Undergraduate Medical Education Website, which contains more information about the structure of the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education and the services this office provides.  It will also have links to pages dedicated to student assistance and information, as well as to other Health Sciences Center sites that you will find useful (and necessary) during your career development here at UNM.  Until the Undergraduate Medical Education site is on-line, we may occasionally post new information for you here, so keep checking back.  Welcome to the School of Medicine!

Computer Requirement for Incoming Students

If you do not currently own a laptop computer with wireless capability, we require that you purchase one.  This should be a Windows XP Professional machine with Microsoft Office 2003 installed.  In order to help you with this requirement, we have an arrangement with the Dell Corporation to provide you with a state-of-the-art laptop at a significantly reduced price.  Please be aware that you are NOT required to purchase either a printer or a PDA, but students in the past have found these to be significantly beneficial.  If you currently have a laptop computer that has wireless capability or you would like to purchase one elsewhere, please call Steve Mitchell, MD, or David Goldstein, our computer expert, at 272-5192 or 272-1992 respectively.

Internet Service Requirement for Incoming Students

The School of Medicine requires you to have Internet service at your home.  This is vital for checking e-mail, viewing the educational website, connecting with the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, and acquiring information via the web.  You are free to use any Internet service provider you wish.
